This Road

This road has been just hard enough.
Now naked, the moon is warm.
The highwaymen pursue their course;
it is only my baggage they have taken.
They are welcome to those trifles.

What they have given me is worth far more.
As water flows in measure to the mouth,
the barest sinew of the soul
will flex to heaven yet.
